A Community Concept

Early in 2017, Sinner Bresnahan Healthy Kids Initiative started asking themselves what more could they do for their community after learning about the growing trend of students being involved in drug and alcohol incidents. Concerned community members, including school leaders, law enforcement officials, parents, students, and business leaders met to discuss the problem. From there a task force was assembled and after discussing strategies, the idea of a youth program now known as 5th Quarter was born.  A young woman spoke up and said "It's not that we want to get into trouble, it's just that there is nothing for us to do."

From that statement, the idea took off. After volunteers stepped up to offer a few events that were well received, the committee knew they were on to something. The committee started formalizing funding and once grants were secured through the Otto Bremer Trust Grant, Casselton Medical Foundation, and SBHKI, a Casselton Community Healthy Youth Coordinator was hired and the program became an official sponsor project under SBHKI.

Our Guiding Philosophy

5th Quarter is based on SEARCH Institute's 40 Developmental Assets Approach.  They have identified 40 critical opportunities, relationships, and personal strengths that young people need to succeed. In their research, they stressed the importance of understanding that all of us have the power to impact the lives of children and youth in our lives. This makes us invested adults not just teachers, volunteers, parents, and neighbors.
